Community - Campus Day of Service

April 5, 2014

On Saturday, April 5th, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign kicks off National Volunteer Week with an inaugural Community-Campus Day of Service. Over 60 students, faculty and staff worked with six community partners on seven projects to complete pre-construction projects, community garden spring preparation projects, flyering in the community, reorganizing classrooms at Tap in Leadership Academy, cataloging choral literature, and preparing a Bee Garden. A big thank you goes out to all who helped on April 20!

Metro East Citizens Air Quality Project

Please visit the Metro East Citizens Air Quality Project website.

The Metro East Citizens Air Quality Project aims to promote and support local and regional efforts to address air pollution through community engagement, education programs and air monitoring throughout the Metro-East area.

This in-community project integrates citizen engagement and education programs, monitoring, and research.  We focus on drawing awareness at the neighborhood level to the health risks associated with air pollution, while providing citizens with the tools to address local air quality and public health concerns.

Long Term Project Goals

At the end of three years, our project aims to:

  • Establish a solid foundation for citizen activism that will sustain the project as a community led 501(c)3 organization.
  • Foster working relationships with citizens and government representatives working on air pollution issues in the Metro East.
  • Contribute to joint community/state initiatives to address air quality and public health.
  • Contribute to reductions in local impacts to those at risk populations.
